Fried Cheese Curds
Fried cheese curds, how can you go wrong?
We recently went to visit my best friend, Pam, and her family in Watertown, New York. It’s called North Country and is basically about 30 minutes from the Canadian border. On a previous visit we had gone with them to Alexandria Bay nearby on the St. Lawrence River. A shop there was selling River Rat cheese curds. We bought them and they were delicious.
If you know anything about cheese curds, they are best when they are super fresh. So this time when visiting, we grabbed a huge bag of cheddar cheese curds. We enjoyed some and brought the rest home. Since they weren’t super fresh once we got home, yet we didn’t want to waste them, we decided to try frying them. And let me say, it was a success!
Here’s the recipe for how we made our fried cheese curds…

- 1 pound cheese curd whichever cheese flavor you want! I used cheddar curds.
- 1 egg
- 1 cup flour
- 2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 3/4 teaspoon sugar
- 1 cup your favorite beer I used Bud Light.
- 2 quarts oil for frying I used vegetable.

- 1. Begin heating your oil for frying to 375 degrees in a sauce pan on your stove. You can also use a deep fryer, like a Fry Daddy, if you have one.
- 2. Whisk the egg is a medium sized bowl, then add in the flour, salt, baking powder, sugar, and the beer.
- 3. Add the cheese curds to the bowl of batter and coat them evenly.
- 4. Use a slotted spoon to add curds, about 8-10 at a time, to the preheated oil. Cook until golden brown, approximately 3 minutes.
- 5. Once golden brown, use the slotted spoon to remove the fried curds and place them on a paper towel lined plate to cool for 5 minutes.
If you have any batter left over, it works great for deep fried Oreos...Mike and I may have tried that and they were delicious!
