Couldn’t Resist a Vegetable Garden
I said I wouldn’t garden this year…
We all know this post is going to end with me telling you I planted a vegetable garden!
One thing I LOVED about our new house when we first saw it was all the gardens. There are gardens everywhere. And I mean everywhere! Around the mailbox, the front yard, along the front of the house, on both sides and along the back to line the property line. There is also a rock garden with a variety of plants coming in and planters along the sides of our screened in porch. We first saw our house in March, before the spring bloom. I told myself that I would wait and not make any gardening decisions or major changes until next year, after I’d had a chance to see what grew in. I don’t know anything about flowers and most plants and so I definitely need to identify what we currently have and either A) learn to care for it or B) replace things with other plants.
If you know me, you know I was an avid urban gardner while Mike and I lived in Baltimore. There, we basically had a 12×20 foot concrete slab back yard, where I had to grow everything in pots. I grew tomatoes, a few varieties of peppers, lots of herbs, and cucumbers. Although it wasn’t the vegetable garden of my dreams, it was perfect for that time and the space we had outdoors. Remember when I said I wasn’t going to make any gardening decisions or major changes? Yeah, I didn’t really believe me either.
I didn’t believe me either
Last week, we needed to stop by Home Depot for a few items for the new house, and of course there was a sale on Bonnie Plants. Needless to say, I grabbed a few. They had been sitting outside on our deck as I tried to decide where they should be planted. All of the gardens in our yard are flowers or shrubs, so where should this simple vegetable garden go?
The only place the seemed to make sense was along the screened in porch. Here’s the before:
There were daffodils and a grass type plant in this space that Mike and I removed. (Don’t worry, we added them all to one of the gardens in the back.) So what’s in our super simple vegetable garden this year?
- Hybrid Hot Banana Peppers (x2)
- Tabasco Hot Peppers
- Patio Tomatoes
- Cucumbers
And here’s the after:
You can’t take the Baltimore out of the girl
I mentioned urban gardening in pots. Well, I couldn’t resist adding some herbs to some pretty pots that came with us from the city. I think they are a great addition to our deck. Here we have sweet basil, Italian oregano and mint.
Next year, I know I’ll really want a bigger space dedicated to growing food and herbs, but for now, I’m very happy with my simple, little vegetable garden.
